3 Books for New Real Estate Agents To Read First
“Beware of the person of one book.” – Thomas Aquinas
It’s no secret that successful people read. The average millionaire reads 30 minutes a day. Warren Buffett reads over 500 pages a day. But reading isn’t just for top earners; it can change your life and career.
Why Read? Why now?
Plain and simple, it’s one of the pathways of having a career worth having and businesses worth owning.
When you read, you gain knowledge without even trying. Knowledge makes anyone more confident in his or her career. And when you feel comfortable in your job, you’ll be more capable to do your best work.
Reading doesn’t just happen in the moment, it gives you a way to spend time with yourself throughout the week .
You can read during your commute, lunch break, on the toilet if you’re one of those (God love ya), or even when you are sleeping.
Of course, being on a website about Keller Williams Careers, we’re going to start with books from the founder of the largest real estate company by associates or agent count, sales and volume.
(Quick side note: you don’t have to be an associate agent of Keller Williams Realty to benefit from these books. These are great resources for any agent in the business no matter their employer. Just remove the namesake in your head and replace it with a company of your choice, but obviously we are partial to Keller Williams Realty)
An Introduction to Keller Ink
Gary Keller (of Keller Williams Realty) has written several books in real estate training, and is one of the only Real Estate CEO’s that is also a published author. In fact, Keller Williams Realty has its own publishing company called Keller Ink.
What’s important about this is that Keller knows how to write. He not only has experience as a leader in the industry, but he also is an experienced writer. Keller Ink publishes books written by business leaders of major corporations, CEOs, and even Gary Keller himself.
Here are three books I recommend:
1. The Millionaire Real Estate Agent
Before I even tell you the title, it’s obvious: read this book. It is easy to read and follow, and it is essentially a blue-print to building careers worth having, businesses worth owning and lives worth living.
This book has been a best seller since its first publication back in 2001. It has sold over a million copies and has even won awards from the National Association of REALTORS (which is impressive). In this classic book Keller talks about nine rules that will help anyone achieve long-term success in their real estate career by becoming a millionaire real estate agent (hence the title). But what I love most about this book is how he teaches you to handle yourself with integrity, honor, and respect. He also stresses the importance of giving back to mankind and serving others while still working your buns off for yourself.
What I love about The Millionaire Real Estate Agent is that it comes from a place of truth. Keller doesn’t just make things up; rather, he interviewed real estate agents running top producing real estate companies to discover what it is that brings them their success. Team structure, marketing, office support, and what model to apply depending on your unique profit goals.
The Millionaire Real Estate Agent offers an insight into self-improvement, which focuses on leadership as well as communication skills (and much more). Keller offers techniques for better communication, deeper relationships and healthier lifestyles. And like any good book, it offers a way to improve yourself.
The Millionaire Real Estate Agent is an excellent place for anyone to start his or her career in real estate. It’s also a great read for those who simply want to grow their business or life. It is the first-step tool for anyone looking to create the riches he or she deserves. This book is a must-have for anyone who wants to build a real estate business worth owning. It’s not so much about the day-to-day stuff like prospecting and listing. Rather, it teaches you how to identify your niche, create an exit strategy designed to protect your profits and maintain control of every aspect of your business.

#2 – Shift
A real estate market goes through many cycles, and when a cycle changes from one to the next, we call that “the shift”. What Keller does in this book is help you identify when the shift is about to happen (or even better, give you a heads-up as it’s happening). Keller gives his proprietary “Shift Indicator” (his method of keeping the pulse on the market) which allows him to predict these changes and helps keep Keller Williams Realty at the top.
The shifts between one phase of business and another are very subtle. You might be able to pick up on them by noticing such things as changes in buyer behavior or how agents communicate with one another. You can also spot shifts by watching for new trends emerging, patterns changing, government policy being issued, new laws being passed, etc. These cultural markers may seem small and insignificant, but they are often the clues you need to know that a shift is about to happen.
Shift helps you identify those change-points in your market, so that you can “shift” with it (hence the title of this book)!
This book will make you feel like you can do anything, whether your goal is to become a millionaire or something else entirely. Like his first book (mentioned above), he focuses on leadership and communication skills in Shift . He uses personal stories that are easy to understand and relate to–attributes of a great writer!

#3 – The ONE Thing
In The ONE Thing , Keller teaches you the importance of mastering your priorities and learning how to save time. He says, “It’s not about having more time for things like tennis, boating or golf. It’s about spending less time on things that are unimportant.” In this book he gives you a very simple formula for achieving success through meaningful productivity in all aspects of life:
Identify what is important (the big rocks) Eliminate everything else (small pebbles) Master doing the one thing with excellence Focus on progress, not perfection
This book will help those who are struggling to prioritize and manage their daily lives. If anything has been holding you back from being as productive as you can be each day, I’d recommend reading this book.
One of my favorite quotes from The ONE Thing is: “You cannot pour new wine into old wineskins. If you do, the new wine will burst the skins—and be lost.” This quote tells me that in order to make progress, I need to break out of my old routine and try some new things. This book will help you gain clarity on what’s important so that you can master it and move forward with confidence.
